Our work has helped train hundreds of optometry technicians across Zambia

Since 1999, Vision Action has been working in Zambia to address the shortage of eye care workers and improve access to affordable eye care.

Our goal is to integrate eye care services across Zambia. We focus on refractive error, primary eye care and school-based eye health. Our partnership with Specsavers created the ‘Embedding Sustainable Eye Care Services in Zambia’ programme through which we have been able to help hundreds of thousands of people across Zambia.

We also worked with Chainama College of Health Sciences to establish the Department of Optometry. The Department has trained hundreds of optometry technicians and prepared them for work in hospitals across the country. We also supported the training of ophthalmic clinic officers and nurses which has resulted in a better distribution of refraction services and access to glasses.

We are also working to integrate eye care into the national school health programme. Our pilot study in Kafue put our evidence-based methodology into practice and its success saw the pilot extended to Kabwe and Petauke. We are now working on testing methods for children who are not in school as well as developing national guidelines and training manuals for school-based eye health.

We are always looking for new ways to improve awareness, knowledge and health-seeking behaviours with the ultimate goal of improving vision, prospects and outcomes for the people of Zambia for generations to come.
