Jemima Keene I am so honoured to share that on the 5th October 2019 I will be travelling to Ethiopia with Vision Aid Overseas, a fabulous charity that is dedicated to providing affordable, accessible eyecare to those living in poverty.
I am 1 of 6 eyecare professionals heading to Butajira and Batu in central Ethiopia to provide an eyecare service to local people of all ages over a 2- week period. This will involve setting up vision centres suitable to perform routine eye examinations & dispense spectacles to those in need. We will also perform some outreach work, providing the same care to more remote villages whose geographical location prevents them from accessing suitable healthcare. Along the way, we will be working with local eyecare professionals, with an aim to support the sustainability of these services once we have left.

The facts!....
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), restoring sight is one of the most cost- effective health interventions to reduce poverty.
Reducing visual impairment is widely seen as an accelerator to eliminating poverty, improving health and well-being, improving education and reducing inequalities. Providing access to affordable eye care services and prescription glasses is essential to ensuring no one is left behind.
• 1.2 billion people worldwide can’t see properly simply because they need glasses
• 12 million children worldwide struggle to learn simply because they need glasses
• 55% of visually impaired people are women
• 89% of visually impaired people live in low and middle-income countries
• 75% of all visual impairment is preventable or curable
• $200 billion worth of productivity is lost every year because so many people do not have the glasses they need to see clearly

In order for me to work hard for your generosity, myself & some supportive pals will be doing the Yorkshire 3 peaks on 7th September 2019. I’ve always wanted to take on this challenge, and I can’t think of a better incentive to get me through the gruelling 24 miles! I will keep you all updated on our progress through the course of the day. Come rain, shine or snow we will complete it!!

Thank you for visiting my fund-raising page & thank you so much for your support. Vision Aid Overseas relies heavily on donations to continue their incredible work overseas & be able to send people like me to support their fight in reducing global sight loss. Jemima Keene
