When I travel to Kabwe, Zambia in October 2019, it will be as part of a small team of professional volunteers from the UK who will deliver a refraction skills course to Zambian health workers. Uncorrected refractive error is one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness worldwide, and it is estimated by the WHO that up to 153 million people globally are blind simply because they don't have glasses. By training Zambian health workers in refraction skills as part of VAO's strategy of building sustainable Vision Centres across Africa, these workers will continue to work and serve their communities for years to come and decrease the number of people who are needlessly blind because of a lack of spectacles. Restoring sight is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing poverty according to the WHO, and by donating just £5 you can give one pair of spectacles to a person in need and change their life!
