A lot has been happening in the Vision Aid Overseas world and this year has seen a real focus on ensuring that our work supports our new strategy.

Working with partners

As part of this, we co- hosted the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), workshop to develop a plan to improve optometry provision across the whole of Africa.  It is exciting to be a part of such an important project, working with other international partners to put in place long term sustainable solutions in the Continent.  Working with partners is critically important to ensure that best use are made of limited resources and the money we are given has the greatest impact.  You will see that as part of this , we have now incorporated the UK work  of Optometry Giving Sight , allowing them to focus on all the great work they do in the rest of the world and for us to be the principle optometry charity in the UK.

Country programmes

Alongside all of this is the continued delivery of the programme work we undertake, delivering solutions and eye care through the fantastic efforts of our Professional Volunteers and with other partners.  During the past 3 months we have continued to work with the Ministry of Health in Zambia and Sierra Leone to deliver on our programmes there.  We are sending our first team, since the ending of the Ebola epidemic, to Sierra Leone in September and it is great to be able to do this, considering the particular hardships the country has faced over recent years.  Our DfID funded programme in Ethiopia has been particularly successful and we are actively seeking further funding to continue the work in rural Ethiopia, once the DfID funding ends this December.

Our programmes of work in the Universities of Zambia, Ethiopia and Ghana, continues at pace and we hope to expand this work in the coming year.  In addition to this, we will use our work in Ghana, both in the Universities and with Korle Bu hospital in Accra to “springboard” into expanding our work in Ghana.

There is so much exciting work going on and Vision Aid Overseas has ambitious plans to expand during the coming years.  None of which can happen without the amazing help of our supporters.

Many Thanks to you all.
