Aim of the Strategic Group

In the Vision Aid Overseas strategy 2020 – 2030, one of the key objectives is: “The development of Human Resources for Eye Health (HReH) at the country level (and to deploy professional volunteers to support their capacity development, and education and training when appropriate)”.

National plans from all the countries we work in include objectives and ambitions to upskill HReH through training, including refresher, continuous professional development (CPD) and continuous medical education (CME).  In addition, some of the countries we work in have an ambition to promote skill sharing and task shifting in order to improve eye health delivery which will necessitate expanding access to training in eye health and to improve the level of training across cadres.

The Education & Training Working Group will explore how Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) can use its volunteering programme to support countries to meet their ambitions towards training and CPD of HReH, as stated in the countries’ national eye health plans.

Skills Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Experience of education and training, ideally in an international development context
  • Excellent understanding and support of VAO’s strategic vision, mission and strategies
  • Ability to commit hours required over the time period to attend e-meetings, complete tasks and create reports.
  • Ability and willingness to meet agreed deadlines for tasks
  • Have good IT skills, Wi-Fi and equipment to attend e-meetings (Zoom or Teams), email, Whatapp, Google Drive.

Role of the Working Group Volunteer

The group will explore, understand and make recommendations on whether VAO can, on the request of our country partners, contribute to supporting their national plans for training in eye health through the use of volunteers (national and international), and what that support may look like. The group will make recommendations on next steps including (but not limited to) developing terms of references, work plans and timelines for delivery, which will be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval.

Working within the group alongside VAO trustees and staff, the volunteer will attend regular e-meetings and take on tasks to work on independently or with other group members, reporting back to the group on their progress.

How to Apply

Please email your CV to [email protected] by Monday 24th May, stating in the body of your email why you would like to join the strategic group. Please put the reference 'ETWG' in the subject line of the email.

In the case of having too many applicants, VAO will select 3 volunteers for the group that they feel will give the group a balance of dynamics as we are looking for a mix of applicants from Optical, non-Optical backgrounds.
